The Gospel 

Below are five truths that you need to understand in order to become a Christian

1. Eternal Life is a Free Gift.  It is not Earned or Deserved.

  • Romans 6:23 - "…the gift of God is eternal life"
  • Ephesians 2:8,9  - "For by grace you have been saved through faith;  and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."

2. Man is a Sinner and Cannot Save Himself

  • Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God."
  • Matthew 5:48 - "Therefore, you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect."

3. God is Merciful and Doesn't Want to Punish Us;  But he is also just and therefore, must punish sin.

  • 1 John 4:8 - "God is love"
  • Exodus 34:7 - "…Who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin;  yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished."
  • Ezekiel 18:4 - "The soul who sins will die"

4. Jesus Christ is the infinite God-Man who died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and rose from the grave to purchase a place for us in Heaven.

  • John 1:1,14 - "In the beginning was the Word… and the Word was God.  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
  • Isaiah 53:6 - "All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way;  But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him."

 5. Faith is the key that opens the door to heaven.

  • It is not mere intellectual assent nor temporal faith.
  • Saving faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life.  It means resting upon Christ alone and what He has done rather than in what you or I have done to get us into heaven.
  • Acts 16:31 - "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."

 You can receive the gift of eternal life right now by…

  • Transferring your trust from self to Jesus
  • Accepting Christ as your Savior (cf. Rev. 3:20)
  • Receiving Jesus Christ as Lord.
  • Repenting of your sins, i.e. turning from that which displeases Him.
The following is a sample prayer that can be prayed in order to become a Christian:  “Lord Jesus Christ, I know I am a sinner and do not deserve eternal life.  But, I believe You died and rose from the grave to purchase a place in heaven for me.  Lord Jesus, come into my life; take control of my life; forgive my sins and save me.  I repent of my sins and now place my trust in You for my salvation.  I accept the free gift of eternal life. Amen.”
