In 1971, D. Martyn Lloyd- Jones, the minister of the Westminster Chapel in London for 30 years, wrote this in his two volume work on the Sermon on the Mount: “I do not think it is a harsh judgment to say that the most obvious feature of the life of the Christian Church today is, alas, it’s superficiality.” One of the reasons for this superficiality or lack of authenticity is because we have neglected the ministry model/ paradigm that Jesus has given us in the Gospels, and in its place, we have adopted a model that looks more like corporate America. In doing so, our focus has shifted from the spiritual nurture and development of the individual – helping him/her develop a vibrant walk with the Lord – to seeing how many people we can get on the rolls of the church. We have become consumed with quantity rather than quality, and the result has been – well, superficiality.

There is a tremendous need in our day for the church to take a fresh look at how Jesus did ministry and then begin emulating Him. At Crossgate we have done just that and we have re-committed ourselves to doing ministry Jesus’ way. In short, what this means is that we are committed to helping each individual develop a dynamic, vibrant walk with the Lord through personal discipleship. We’re not merely interested in seeing the numbers on our roll swell; our goal is to help each person experience the reality and power of the resurrected Lord Jesus in every area of his/her life. We don’t want to simply help people be more religious; we want them to know, love and enjoy God.
